Notes from Eastport

author on Jun 16, 2008

The eighth annual Pops Concert/Small Ensemble Night/Awards Ceremony was held at the Eastport South Manor High School on Friday, June 13. Everything from the Beatles to show tunes, to rock and roll to Mozart, to an original student composition, was performed by various ensembles, duets, trios and choirs. The students danced, sang and generally had a great time entertaining their friends and all of the parents who attended. The Music Boosters hosted a reception during intermission, serving cake and coffee and other snacks.

Halfway through the second part of the concert, a music ensemble performed two songs by the Beatles. The auditorium was dark until suddenly there was a sea of waving arms holding illuminated—are you ready—cell phones, in place of the usual lighters or glow sticks or, back in the day, lit matches. It was the 2008 version of holding up a light source to sway to the music. It was really cool. It was really pretty.

Anyway, congratulations to all of the students who put on a wonderful show and to all of the students who received awards that night. The music department at ESM has grown over the years into something really successful and spectacular. Thanks go out to Mr. Vignona and Mr. Graf, who so obviously have captured the hearts and spirits of these young men and women.

I’ve seen some signs up in the area advertising local summer vacation Bible schools. Members of the Westhampton Presbyterian Church will hold theirs the week of August 18-22. The Eastport Bible Church will have one this summer, too. Keep looking for more information on that.

In the meantime, the Eastport Bible Church Youth Group is getting ready for a busy summer of fellowship and fun beginning with a 4-Square and Mario Kart Wii Tourney (how cool is that?) at the church this Friday at 7 p.m. They will officially kick off the summer with a barbecue today, Thursday, June 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Youth Group members will spend time at the beach and “Time Alone With God” once a week at the beach beginning on July 2. And there’s the Hershey Park Camping Trip on the schedule for July 12-14.

Call Jeremy Herr, the youth pastor at the Eastport Bible Church, at 801-2615 for more information. The youth groups are open to any junior and senior high school student from any school district.

The Southampton Town Parks and Recreation Department is offering a trip to a Long Island Ducks baseball game on Tuesday, July 29. The cost of the trip is $12 per person. This includes round-trip transportation and the game ticket. A bus will leave from Hampton Bays that afternoon at 5 p.m. Call 728-8585 for more information.

The Town of Southampton also offers Summer Fun Playground Programs each summer. There will be one held at the Remsenburg/Speonk Elementary School from June 30 through July 25. This program is open to students who attend the Eastport Elementary School. The program meets daily during the week, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It is free for town residents. Call the Parks and Recreation Department for more information about the Summer Fun program.

We are in the throes of review sessions, tests, Regents exams and the final days of school! The countdown is on and the school year is quickly nearing an end! I can almost hear “Pomp and Circumstance” already ...

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories.
