The members of Noyac Golf Club, with support from the club’s Board of Directors, raised more than $50,000 for the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry and its efforts to feed those most in need. A check was presented to longtime Director Evelyn Ramunno, who expects to use part of the funds to purchase a walk-in freezer, allowing the pantry to more efficiently provide non-shelf stable food to its clients.
“The numbers of families we serve grew dramatically during the pandemic,” said Ms. Ramunno. “Our small community pantry is now feeding between 100 and 120 families every week — almost 500 people. We spend thousands of dollars or more every week for dairy, produce and meats. Having access to better and larger freezer space will enable us to purchase perishable products more economically. We can take advantage of pricing opportunities, because we can store and hold our purchases until we are ready to distribute them. We are so grateful to have the support of Noyac Golf Club. This is a significant donation, and it will make a tangible difference.”
The effort to support local neighbors in need was initiated by a committee of Noyac Golf Club members led by Steve Maietta.
“Noyac has been a part of the Sag Harbor community for nearly 60 years,” said Mr. Maietta. “The pandemic has been hardest on the most vulnerable in our population. Our members have been fortunate, and we felt it was important to help right here in our own backyard.”
The Sag Harbor Food Pantry is located in the Old Whalers’ Church at 44 Union Street in Sag Harbor and is open for food distribution on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
