Southampton Village ZBA Chairman Resigns

Luke Ferran, the chairman of the Southampton Village Zoning Board of Appeals, resigned from the board last week, effective immediately. In resigning, Ferran cited his professional responsibilities to his new job. Ferran, a licensed architect, joined Discovery Land Company, a real estate development company and hospitality operator, last November, as a senior project manager. Then-Mayor Jesse Warren appointed Ferran to the ZBA in 2021 to fulfill an unexpired term ending in 2023. Then in 2023, Mayor Bill Manger appointed Ferran to a full five-year term. I hope Southampton Town avoids excessively micromanaged County Road 39 traffic patterns from the pilot study, which were biased and served personal interest [“Southampton Traffic Experiment Showed Big Improvements in Commute Times During First Week; New Changes Tried This Week,” 27east.com, April 27]. Blinking yellow lights, restricted access, excessive turn limits, police presence, cones and no speed enforcement — it all created confusion and compromised safety. Charles McArdle has repeatedly used the phrase “few for so many” to justify forced restrictions placed on the Shinnecock Hills and Tuckahoe communities to serve commuters. In July 2022, Southampton Village officials, at a public meeting, adopted the New York State Climate Smart Communities pledge: “in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a change in climate ...” It required the village to decrease energy use, shift to clean, renewable energy, and implement climate-smart land use. The elected officials hired a consulting firm, Johnson Controls, for advice on accomplishing these goals. Solar panels were installed on the police station and other buildings. No one complained. The memorial poppy is handmade by disabled veterans in hospitals and workshops. The veteran is paid for each poppy he/she makes and many veteran patients derive considerable therapeutic and psychological benefits making poppies. Each nine-piece poppy is painstakingly made and never sold but given in exchange for a contribution. The poppy program has been part of American Legion Auxiliary programming for more than 69 years. Water Mill Museum To Open for Season on May 22

The Water Mill Museum will reopen for the season on Thursday, May 22, and has announced its calendar of events for the coming months. The museum is located at 41 Old Mill Road and is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum is closed Monday to Wednesday. The Water Mill Museum dates back to 1644, with a rich history of being the oldest restored working water-powered grist mill in the United States.
