Robert Lewis Callender of Southampton and Manhattan died with his family at his side on April 3, following a battle with cancer. He was 77.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was a 1953 graduate of Dartmouth College and a 1954 graduate of the Tuck School of Business. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, he worked at Chase Manhattan Bank, General Foods, the Continental Bank of Illinois, and Computer Property Corporation. He joined Fairfield Communities as vice chairman and stayed with the firm until his retirement in 1988.
Survivors said last week that Mr. Callender was a man devoted to family and friends and that his life and character were defined by integrity, loyalty, generosity and laughter.
Mr. Callender is survived by his wife, Cathy Callender of Southampton; a son, Will Callender and his wife Anne of Manhattan; a granddaughter, Madeleine; a grandson, Robert; and many close friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in New York City; for details call 283-7210. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O'Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.
