I found last week’s editorial, titled “Change the Subject” [Opinion, February 29], offensive, misleading and inaccurate.
I am a long-term resident of Hampton Bays and have been outspoken regarding the placement of a large battery energy storage system facility on North Road. I am also a patriotic American, a Democrat, and an strong advocate for green energy.
My objections to the BESS facility on North Road are because the planning was shoddy, the town was led to believe the technology was totally benign, and the waiver allowing the permit in a residential area was driven by misinformation and profit motives.
Furthermore, the originally selected site in Hampton Bays on North Road is in heart of a residential and recreational hub in the community and is otherwise an environmentally vulnerable and dangerous location. Even the former town supervisor and the entire Town Board in granting the original moratorium admitted they made a poor decision based on misinformation.
The community has presented an excellent case against North Road BESS, and no reasonable thinking individual can disagree that the North Road location is inappropriate. No one in Hampton Bays objects to a BESS facility in a remote or industrial area of Hampton Bays or other judiciously selected area in the Town of Southampton.
It appears to me that the author of the editorial is the one with his head buried in the sand.
I am encouraged by the fact that there are members of the new Town Board who also appear to understand the importance of using the moratorium as an opportunity to ensure that BESS projects are developed safely and responsibly.
