During the mayoral debate hosted on Friday by The Southampton Press at the Southampton Arts Center [“Watch: Southampton Village Mayoral Debate 2025,” 27east.com, June 8], mayoral candidate Ed Simioni stated that the Hillcrest neighborhood is one of four areas of the village undergoing higher-level reconnaissance study.
That is incorrect. There are three, not four, areas — and Hillcrest is not included in this study referenced during the debate, which is being conducted by Preservation Studios in Southampton Village.
The areas being studied are:
• East of Main Street, over to Lewis Street and Rogers Avenue.
• The northern stretches of Elm Street and connecting streets.
• The area north of Hill Street, centered on Halsey Street and including Armande, Henry, and Cooper streets.
The survey is largely financed by a grant from the State of New York based on a proposal generated from a request for proposals released May 9, 2022, by the village’s Building Department. Page 2 of the RFP outlines the areas of study, and the map on Page 8 outlines clearly the three areas for review.
Once the study is complete, expected this fall, the results will be presented to the mayor and trustees, who will determine the way forward.
