Orson Desaix Munn Jr.

Orson Desaix Munn Jr., former Southampton Village Board Trustee, died at his home on Thursday, August 25. He was 86.

Serving on the Southampton Village Board of Trustees for 19 years, July 1967 to June 1986, Mr. Munn was responsible for the creation and funding of many of the parks that currently exist in the village.

He was born on January 22, 1925 in New York City to Orson Desaix Munn and Carrie Munn, and was the great-grandson of the first Orson Desaix Munn, who founded Scientific American magazine and its patent agency, Munn & Co., the company that was partially responsible for the rapid growth of the American patent system. In its peak years around 1860, one-third of all patents issued by the U.S. Patent Office were prosecuted by Munn & Co.

During World War II, Mr. Munn served as an executive officer on a torpedo boat in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1948, and from Fordham Law School.

Mr. Munn was married to Patricia Geoghegan Munn, on June 18, 1948, in New York City.

He founded Orson Munn & Company in 1983 and subsequently merged his firm with Bernhard Associates to create Munn, Bernhard & Associates in 1990.

He previously was chief investment officer of Madison Fund, Inc., president of Madison Advisors, president of Piedmont Advisory Corp. and vice chairman and chief investment officer of Lexington Management.

He began his investment career at Wood Walker & Company and eventually became chief executive officer and chairman of the executive committee.

During his lifetime, Mr. Munn was known as a great fisherman and one of the world’s best shots for waterfowl and upland game.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Orson Desaix Munn III and Linda Munn; and four granddaughters, Sasha, Cara and Cameron Munn, and Caroline McConnaughey; and daughter-in-law, Christine Munn.

A private interment took place on Saturday, August 27, in Southampton. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southampton Hospital Foundation, 240 Meeting House Lane, Southampton, NY 11968, or Class of 1947 Scholarship Fund, Princeton University, P.O. Box 5357, Princeton NJ 08543-5357

The Bounty That Surrounds Us

When the Community Preservation Fund gets its well-earned accolades for the good it has done for the East End in the past quarter century, the focus often is on the preservation of land, keeping it from being developed and thus protecting the region from becoming too intensely suburban. Without question, that effort to maintain the region’s rural appeal is a significant, historic accomplishment. But sometimes we forget the importance of the CPF in keeping agriculture alive as a major contributor to the region’s agroeconomy, which has quality-of-life benefits of its own for both farmers and those who live among their ... by Editorial Board

East Quogue School District Budget of $32.3 Million on the Ballot Tuesday

The East Quogue School District will ask voters to approve the district’s proposed $32.3 million budget for the 2025-26 school year, which hikes spending by more than 5 percent but does not pierce the state tax cap. The proposed budget is a $1,578,988 increase in spending over the current school year’s budget, driven mostly by contractual salary hikes for staff and increasing costs of health insurance, rising tuition costs for students who attend the Westhampton Beach School District’s middle school and high school, and expanding the English language arts and science curriculum, according to the district’s budget documents. The growth in spending is driven primarily by increases in the cost of health insurance premiums, busing costs and tuition for students who have graduated from the Quogue School and moved up to the Westhampton Beach School District’s middle school and high school.
