Out of Place

It has come to my attention that the Village of Southampton has plans to construct a 125-foot cell tower on Windmill Lane, directly behind the legendary firehouse [“Southampton Village Looks To Add Cell Tower; Historic District Could Be Expanded,” 27east.com, November 15, 2024]. This height is equivalent to a 12-story building, and this undertaking seems greatly out of place for our quaint, historic village.

I come from a family of firefighters and certainly support our first responders. Where I live now in Colorado, we use Starlinks to connect our emergency services to their mobile devices, and this works well in densely populated and rural areas. It could easily work here.

Are our officials aware that in California firefighter unions have fought against the construction of cell towers adjacent to their stations, or that New Hampshire has a new ruling that cell towers be set back 1,640 feet from residences, schools or businesses?
