Overplayed Hand

There was indeed an egregious wrong done, and it was done by the Southampton History Museum [“Egregious Wrong,” Letters, June 12]. Knowing that an overwhelming majority of the people who would be voting on their budget this year are against them trying to toss out the shellfish hatchery, they waited until after the budget vote to let us know they will be using the money we provided them with to sue the town over the discovery that the town owns part of Conscience Point — as they knew if they did this before the vote, they would have lost.

They are so clever. That is why we didn’t hear from Averitt Buttry until last week. One person did not redraw property lines, and there is much ambiguity regarding Conscience Point ownership. In fact, it appears highly likely that the town owns a portion of the land, and you guys/gals overplayed your hand — and in the unlikely case you prevail in your lawsuit, you will get slaughtered at the next budget vote.

I bet people who contribute to you are starting to rethink that, too. I, like most people, have generally been in favor of the Southampton History Museum. Until now.
