Part-time East Hampton Resident Mary Pritchard Durkin Dies May 1

Mary Pritchard Durkin
Mary Pritchard Durkin of New York City died on May 1 after a long battle with lung cancer. She was 72.

Born on January 19, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Elizabeth and Manion Pritchard, she was a graduate of the Sacred Heart School in Lake Forest, Illinois, and the University of Minnesota.

Following graduation, she moved to New York, where she was a teacher and an independent photographer for a number of years. She had houses in East Hampton, Boca Grande, Florida, and Kempton, Pennsylvania. She was a member of the Colony Club, the Maidstone Club and the Gasparilla Club.

Her interests included bridge, politics, travel, entertaining, water aerobics, dancing, and ice skating. Survivors said she devoted her life to her family and many friends and that she was fiercely loyal, deeply loving, principled, courageous and thankful for the many joys in life.

Ms. Durkin is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles P. Durkin Jr.; a son, Charles P. Durkin III, and a daughter-in-law, Kristen. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth; a brother, Thomas; and 11 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Anne.

The Mary Durkin Fund for Student Life has been established in her memory at St. Andrew’s School, 350 Noxontown Road, Middletown, DE 19709, to which memorial donations may be made.

A funeral Mass was held on Monday, May 6, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan. Interment was private.
