Pass The Word

The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons thanks the Express News Group for its continued coverage of the 2019 election season and its related and evolving events. It has also publicized our candidate debates focusing on county and town contests and participated in two of them. It has reached out to us for our input to its recent article on New York’s new Early Voting reform [“Early Voting To Broaden Times, Locations For Local Voters Ahead Of Election Day,” 27east.com, October 14].

We also want to again remind New York voters of that new option and ask them to pass the word.

Beginning Saturday, October 26, and ending Sunday, November 3, voters in Suffolk County may go to any Suffolk County designated site to cast their ballots. The two locations in our area are Windmill Village, 219 Accabonac Road, East Hampton, and Stony Brook University gymnasium, 70 Tuckahoe Road, Southampton. Other county locations may be found on the county’s Board of Elections website.

Although the times vary by day, they are uniform throughout the county: October 26 and 27, and November 2 and 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; October 28, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; October 29, noon to 8 p.m.; October 30 and 31, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and November 1, noon to 8 p.m.

Another reform signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo: Voters may now register to change party affiliation by February 14, 2020, in order to vote in upcoming primaries. They need to fill out a new registration form and send it to the relevant Board of Elections. Forms are available at libraries, post offices and online.

For more information about races that will be on one’s ballot, voters can check out VOTE411.org and enter their address to see candidates’ responses to questions posed by the League about their stance on issues.

And, as always, voters can vote at their usual polling places from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on election day, Tuesday, November 5.
