A Flanders man was arrested by Southampton Town Police on Thursday, July 4, after police said he threw a kitten from a moving vehicle, killing it.
Hector Herrera Castillo, 43, was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony.
According to a press release, police received a call at approximately 8 a.m. of a vehicle driving east on Flanders Road near Spinney Road in Flanders. The caller reported that the driver of the vehicle, Mr. Castillo, had thrown the kitten.
Southampton Town Police located the vehicle a short time later and arrested Mr. Castillo, who they believe was the owner of the animal.
Mr. Castillo was transported to police headquarters in Hampton Bays and held overnight for arraignment on Friday. He posted $3,000 bail and is due to appear back in Southampton Town Justice Court on July 11, according to Southampton Town Justice Court Clerk Jackie McKay.
