Personal Piggy Bank

This was the danger of the Community Housing Fund when it was first voted for [“Southampton Town Board Urged To Use Community Housing Fund To Protect as Affordable a Multi-Unit House in Sag Harbor,” 27east.com, August 14]. The lack of transparency, consistency and integrity of such a fund needs strict guidelines to establish the very parameters needed to address housing issues.

Adam Potter is right to say that the present plan is inadequate and wreaks of favoritism.

The integrity of such a fund needs a well-defined plan — and, unfortunately, the current lack of defined guidelines is apparent in the Sag Housing LLC situation.

It’s time for those who wanted such a fund to step up and create the road map for success, rather than a personal piggy bank for pet peeve projects. This current plan is ridiculously confusing, with, apparently, tenants in place who would continue their housing expectations without a lottery to assure no nepotism or preferable treatment.

To support a CHF, you must set parameters that align with the integrity of the original design. But when the design is flawed, so is the outcome.

The CHF needs long-term planning that will allow adequate housing for not just the right reasons but also to assure that no preferential treatment is given to any particular group. The present situation is like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. Much more thought and consideration is needed, especially when using public funds for projects.
