Peter V. Schunk
Peter Vincent Schunk of Westhampton Beach died at home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, November 12. He was 56.
Born on May 31, 1955, to Charles and Evelyn Schunk at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead, he graduated from Westhampton Beach High School in 1973 and worked at the family-owned Trolley Barn in Speonk for many years.
Mr. Schunk was an avid fan of top-fuel drag racing, the Mets and the Grateful Dead; he loved his daughters and was a good friend and ally to many. His zest for life, uncanny perspective on people and quirky sense of humor were endless. Rather than wither from adversity, he was known to work hard for the benefit of serving others. In this spirit, he returned to school after many years and many injuries as a carpenter to earn a master’s degree, with honors, in social work from SUNY Stony Brook.
In addition to his two daughters, Devin and Kayla, he is survived by siblings, Robin Schunk Martin and her husband Don of Flanders, Patricia Stinchi of Westhampton Beach, Michael of Shirley and Jeffrey of South Carolina; nephews, David Stinchi and his wife Carole of East Hampton, Marcus Stinchi and Kyle Riedesel of East Quogue, Cayne Poplaski and a niece, Dacia and her husband, Joseph DiBiase both of North Carolina; as well as many grandnieces and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations to the Good Shepherd Hospice, 245 Old Country Road, Melville, NY 11747, or the Lustgarten Foundation for the research of pancreatic cancer, 111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714, would be appreciated by the family.
