Prominent headlines in the local press in the last few weeks have touted efforts to address two especially vexing issues on the South Fork: traffic and affordable housing. These issues are intertwined in several ways, including this one: With one exception, it is too late to do anything about them. The time is almost over for any truly game-changing programs or initiatives. The more foreseeable future will be pretty much like the frustrating present of clogged intersections and longtime residents selling high here and trying to buy low in Georgia. Looking at traffic first, a few years ago there was ... 3 Aug 2021 by Tom Clavin

Finding Discrimination

The Suffolk County Legislature last week approved the creation of a Permanent Housing Advisory Board to focus on housing discrimination here. The formation of a 15-person board follows a three-year investigation by Newsday that, as the measure establishing the board noted, “uncovered extensive evidence of impermissible steering of consumers seeking to purchase a home” — and this “on the basis of race,” and “throughout Long Island.” “This practice,” it went on, “has reinforced racial divides throughout communities, despite fair housing laws which prohibit such pernicious discrimination.” Among members of the board: the presiding officer of the County Legislature, who would ... by Karl Grossman

Bards At Sea

It may come as a surprise, but some of those rugged sailors who chased whales all over the world and engaged in death struggles with the giant beasts actually crouched down in a tossing cabin or a gloomy forecastle — and wrote lines of poetry. The lines might not be mistaken for Robert Frost, but they prove that the human impulse for artistic expression can be found in the unlikeliest people in the unlikeliest circumstances. See this mournful and philosophical expression from Captain Lorenzo Baker of the Romulus, upon the death of Felix Hernon, who was lost overboard on November ... by Jim Marquardt

Tomato Time

The barn swallows are fledging their second set of young, and the whole huge family, the first fledge, too, perches along the grain auger. There are multiple nests in numerous barns, and by counts in our yard it has been a good year for them. They move like squadrons on wing if you are causing a disturbance anywhere, with a tractor or even with a dog running across the lawn. They will swoop in to collect the insects that fly from your wake. These are resident but migratory birds. As a farmer, I spend a fair amount of time with ... by Marilee Foster

Terrible Darkness

“Suffolk County was the first in the state to bring litigation,” noted Rob Calarco, presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, about the lawsuit the county brought in 2016 against multiple defendants in connection with the plague of opioids that has caused many deaths in Suffolk County and elsewhere. Nassau County and the attorney general joined in the lawsuit. Thereafter, other governments in New York State got involved in it. And Suffolk County’s legal initiative “precipitated other municipalities across the country to bring their own lawsuits in their own jurisdictions or in federal court,” said Mr. Calarco. What national media ... by Karl Grossman
