Phyllis M. Shaughnessy
Longtime Southampton resident Phyllis M. Shaughnessy died on June 25 at Southview Senior Living in St. Paul, Minnesota, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 87.
Born February 16, 1923, in Lynn, Massachusetts, she graduated from Lynn High School. After she joined the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1943, she was stationed at Paris Island for two years.
In 1949, she graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in music, majoring in voice. She met Robert Shaughnessy while at Boston University and the two were married in September 1949. The couple moved to Southampton in 1965 with their seven children and four cats.
An accomplished mezzo soprano, Ms. Shaughnessy sang in oratorios, baroque operas, and small ensembles, with her husband and children frequently performing with her. She was also an avid gardener and a devoted member of Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton.
She is survived by three daughters, Maura Shaughnessy of Massachusetts, Ann Gillette of New Jersey, and Margaret Fusek of Connecticut; four sons, Christopher Shaughnessy of Sagaponack, Stephen Shaughnessy of Sag Harbor, Michael Shaughnessy of Minnesota and Daniel Shaughnessy of North Carolina; and many grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years in 2007.
A memorial mass will be held on October 4 at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton.
