It was a busy and successful fall for Pierson’s athletic programs, with both field hockey and girls cross country reaching their respective state championships, while the boys soccer team was one win away from doing so.
The Whalers field hockey team reached the New York State Tournament, which was played in Suffolk County for the first time. They lost in the semifinals to eventual county champion and state powerhouse Whitney Point, but it was still a successful season for Long Island and Suffolk County champion Pierson.
Meredith Spolarich was named All-State for her efforts and was also named to the All-State Tournament Team. Both Micky Wilson and Caroline Canavan were named to the Long Island Championship Tournament Team and Eleana Merola and Lily Perello were named to the Suffolk County Championship Tournament Team.
Madison Stuckart earned All-County honors, Mia Gangemi was an All-County Honorable Mention and Eva McKelvey was All-Division. Tahnie Sullivan was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award and Cali Wilson was given the Sportsmanship Award.
Pierson’s girls cross country team qualified for the New York State Class D Championship race after winning the Suffolk County title. Sara O’Brien, an eighth-grader, emerged as the team’s top runner and has All-League honors to show for it.
The Pierson boys cross country team placed second in Suffolk County’s Class D race and also placed second in League VIII. A pair of runners, P.J. Ramundo and Justin Gardiner, qualified for the New York State Championships. Both were All-County, All-Division and All-League runners.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton boys soccer team defeated Southold for the Suffolk County Class C title and defeated Carle Place for the Long Island Championship, but then lost to eventual state champion Alexander Hamilton in the Regional Final.
The Whaler’s starting goalie, Gavin Gilbride, was named All-County and All-Conference, while Helio Paucer was named Most Valuable Player of the Suffolk County Championship. David Moreno was also named All-Conference, while Javi Tubatan and Ryder Esposito both earned All-League honors. Pierson’s boys junior varsity team was given the League VII Sportsmanship Award.
Brenden Burke led the Pierson/Bridgehampton boys golf team all season and was therefore named the team’s MVP. He also earned All-League status.
Charlie Corwin impressed in his first varsity football season with the East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton/Ross football team as a sophomore and earned All-County honors and a Team MVP Award to show for it. Juniors Finn Byrnes and Will Darrell earned First Team All-Division honors, while juniors Dan Lester and Richie Maio and senior Mike Moret were named Second Team All-Division. Aryan Chugh was named Most Improved and John Marin was given the Coaches Award.
Sandrine Becht and Maya Molin earned All-County, All-Division and All-League honors while playing for the East Hampton/Pierson girls tennis team.
Melissa Quihuiri and Jocelyn Prieto were named All-Division playing for the East Hampton/Pierson girls soccer team. Prieto was also named the team’s MVP, Skye Tanzman was named Most Improved Player and Nicole Velez was given the team’s Coaches Award.
Each of the school’s fall varsity programs — boys and girls cross country, boys golf, boys soccer, field hockey and girls volleyball — each earned New York State Scholar-Athlete team honors by having a cumulative GPA of 90 or higher. Additional information on the girls volleyball team was not available.
Both Southampton boys and girls soccer teams qualified for the Suffolk County Class B playoffs.
After sharing the League VII title with Babylon following identical 14-2 seasons, the boys lost in penalty kicks to Mattituck in the county semifinals. Sophomore Christopher Sullivan earned All-State honors, the youngest player in program history to do so, according to head coach Dave Riley. Senior Turner West was named All-Conference and was co-recipient with West Islip’s Joe Blackton of the Suffolk County Boys Soccer Coaches Association’s Ray Perez Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is named after the former SCSCA president and recognizes ability on the field combined with scholarly achievements.
Senior Patrick Matthews was named All-Conference and Academic All-County. Both Matthews and West played in the Suffolk County Exceptional Senior Game. Junior goaltender Andy Panza earned All-Conference honors and sophomore Mason Stevens and freshman Nicholas Gonzalez were both All-League players.
The Southampton girls soccer team went 8-7-1 overall and earned the second seed in their respective bracket to host a playoff game for the first time in program history. Carli Cameron was named Second Team All-State and All-County while Ellie Avallone, Taylor Zukosky and Gabby Arnold were named All-Division.
Billy Malone was the lone Southampton student athlete to reach his respective state championship this fall. Malone, an All-County, All-Division and All-County cross country runner, placed 61st in the state race. Evan Simioni joined Malone as an All-Division and All-League runner, while Saintino Arnold and Tanner Marro were both All-league.
Southampton field hockey senior Tri-Captain Lucy Wesnofske earned an All-County Honorable Mention, senior Clare Gabriele earned All-Classification and senior Maggie Gabriele earned All-Division honors. Junior goalie Chloe Phillips was named All-Division and senior Tri-Captain Lauren Halsey was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award.
The pair of Shelby De Los Santos and Madison Taylor led Southampton’s young girls tennis team all fall and earned All-League honors along the way.
Liam Blackmore earned All-County, All-Conference and All-League honors to lead Southampton’s boys golf team. His brother, Jack Blackmore, earned All-Conference and All-League honors, while Jack Brown was All-League.
Each of Southampton’s fall sports programs — boys and girls cross country, boys golf, boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis and girls volleyball — were New York State Scholar-Athlete teams, holding a cumulative GPA of 90 or above.
