Southampton Town Police arrested two men and charged them each with robbery in the second degree, a felony, after an incident in Riverside on Wednesday, June 12.
Timothy Haught, 44, and John E. Jones Jr., 40, both of whom police said are homeless, were arrested after police responded to a robbery in progress at about 12:20 p.m. near the intersection of Flanders Road and Vail Avenue. According to police, a Riverhead man was walking in the Riverside Maritime Trail Park when he was approached by Haught and Jones, who grabbed him from behind, pulled him to the ground, and stole the cash from his pockets. Police said that the man was uninjured.
A Southampton Village K-9 officer and his K-9 partner helped police track the suspects into a nearby wooded area, police said, where detectives arrested Haught and Jones. They were held overnight and brought to Southampton Town Justice Court for arraignment on Thursday morning.
