Sunset is a thin crimson streak. It’s a steady northwest wind but not cold. With January like this, warm as April and the daffodils beside the barn already early and inches high, what is one to think? What would Dick Hendrickson think? Mr. Hendrickson (1912-2016) was the living epitome of historic Bridgehampton. He was a writer, a farmer, a gun collector and a poet. He was a storyteller, so fascinated by weather and steadfast enough to chronicle the temperature and conditions outside his door every day over 85 years. He says in his book, “Winds of the Fishtail”: “Beware the ... 28 Jan 2020 by Staff Writer

Austen And Alcott

The classics never go out of style. In fact, they seem to be having a revival. Jane Austen’s “Sanditon,” her last novel, left unfinished, has been made into an eight-part series on PBS. The seventh film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” has been written and directed by Greta Gerwig, with Saoirse (pronounced, Ser-Sha) Ronan playing Jo. Beautifully shot and well-acted, you feel the hugable closeness of the four sisters as they plot their passage from childhood to womanhood. You want to share in their comforting warmth. They mirror the female characters in Austen’s novels as they explore escaping the ... by Staff Writer

What Integrity Means

The editor of a women’s magazine had called me up and asked me to write a piece on teaching kids to read, and I had agreed to do it. Writing magazine pieces was how I made my living. At the time, in the early 1980s, the question of how to teach reading was much in dispute. One side favored rote learning in a system called phonics, which was how I was schooled in reading, although not how I learned. My mother’s mother taught me to read, at the age of 4, before I even went to school, by sitting me ... 27 Jan 2020 by Staff Writer

Hayground School News, January 30

Hayground School “Mything-In-Action” is a performance of mythology by Hayground Senior Learners in collaboration with artists Lora Lomuscio and Bran Dougherty-Johnson. Informed by Karen Armstrong’s scholarship on myth, and reading Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, the students crafted myths while in residence at The Watermill Center. The grounds of Watermill Center and viewing Neil Gaiman’s Master Class on Writing inspired the students to consider setting and place, as well as character development in their writing. Like Karen Armstrong, who believes that “myth is an art form,” the students collaborated with artists Lora Lomuscio and Bran Dougherty-Johnson in breathing life into their ... by My27east
