Preserving Windmill

Fellow Southampton College alumni and I would like to thank you for printing the letter “We Were Here” on September 23 and thereby sharing with our community our thoughts from our over 10,000 strong college alums. Many alums live all over the world, while others, like myself, came to Southampton College and never left the area, working, shopping and raising our families here.

We were thrilled to see the press release on September 24 about our windmill. Assemblyman — and alumnus — Fred Thiele nominated the Southampton campus windmill for a $500,000 capital grant to rehabilitate it, repairing storm damage.

Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis commented: “The SBU campus community is proud to be the caretaker of the windmill, a cherished historical icon that has existed in its current location for over a century. We join with the East End community in thanking Assemblyman Thiele for securing funding that will help preserve and restore the blades, as well as ensure other important historic renovations.”

Here’s to preserving our Southampton campus windmill in Shinnecock Hills.
