Priscilla Stafford of Sag Harbor died on February 12, 2019 at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. She was 80.

Born August 18, 1938, at Jamaica Hospital, she attended Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, earned a degree in engineering from Elmira College and was employed by Bell Telephone Company as an executive in systems engineering.

The Stafford family built a Sag Harbor home in 1938, where they have since resided locally for more than 70 years. Survivors said Ms. Stafford had a special community of friends whom she cared for, noting that she was happiest when helping and doing for others.

She loved animals, gardening and walking outdoors, especially along the beaches in the Sag Harbor community.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Diakun. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Peter Foster, John Stafford, Janet Foster, Andrea McAree, Maureen Stafford, James Foster, and Ted Stafford III; 26 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Rosemary Mitchell, and Howard and Phyllis Kleinsmith.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ted and Helen Stafford; and her brother, Ted Stafford Jr.

Memorial donations may be made to Cormaria Retreat, Box 1993, Sag Harbor, NY 11963, or the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, arfhamptons.org.

The Downtown Dilemma

Last week, an Express Sessions event in Sag Harbor focused on the village’s shopping district and explored a puzzle: If last summer was the busiest ever, and the streets of Sag Harbor were, by all accounts, packed on most every day and evening, why were the owners of shops on Main Street and elsewhere in the business district reporting a down year? The answers are elusive, complicated — and, in many ways, universal to every downtown shopping district on the South Fork, from Montauk to Eastport: Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Water Mill, Amagansett, East Hampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays. ... by Editorial Board
