Proper Buffer

Most days, I run by Old Town Pond. Several weeks ago, I was surprised to see the pond exposed and experienced for the first time its beauty, size and wildlife, especially a pair of swans [“Cutting of Vegetation Along Eastern Shore of Old Town Pond in Southampton Earns Mixed Reviews,” 27east.com, December 6].

The cleanup of phragmites finally gives us a wonderful view, which may be fleeting, however, because phragmites are an invasive, pond-choking excuse for a bioswale and unfortunately will grow back.

I also drive by Old Town Pond each day on the way to Little Plains Beach. I’m happy to report that a safety issue at the convergence of Old Town Road and Gin Lane has been resolved. This dangerous hidden curve is now visible — oncoming traffic, and pedestrians can now see each other.

I’m looking forward to the next phase, where the village creates a proper landscape buffer, not overgrown and not overdone. East Hampton’s Town Pond comes to mind.
