Two great programs are coming up at the Quogue Library this weekend. First up, historian and author Michael Martin will provide a presentation honoring the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, “The Last Port,” on Saturday, April 28, at 8 p.m. Mr. Martin will talk about the history of the port town of Cobh (Queenstown) and Cork Harbour and how the Titanic arrived there on April 11, 1912.
On Sunday, April 29, Maria Daddino, author of “Maria’s Duck Tales: Wildlife Stories From My Garden,” will read from her book at 3 p.m., with a book signing and reception to follow. Copies of “Maria’s Duck Tales” will be available for purchase for $14.95, by cash or check only.
This happy, sad, and at times a little whimsical collection of short stories looks at the complicated, sometimes heartbreaking but always enriching relationship between a woman and the wildlife that calls her garden home.
As it always does at this time of the year, it’s getting very busy at the Quogue School these days. The last two weeks have been devoted to state testing, and now it’s time for what used to be called “Turn Off TV Week” but now goes by the title of “Go Green and Turn Off the Screen” week. So no doubt the students are ready to head out on some spring road trips.
On Monday, April 30, all the pupils from prekindergarten through sixth grade are scheduled to head over to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. Tuesday has been designated Walk/Bike to School Day, and is also the day when the sixth-graders will get ready for next year by traveling to Westhampton Beach Middle School for an orientation.
Wednesday, May 2, will feature a plethora of Earth Day activities and programs, and on on Thursday, May 3, golf clinics will be offered for all the students. Thursday is also the day of the Staff Appreciation luncheon, courtesy of the Quogue School PTA, and, in the evening, the New York State School Music Association soloists and Chamber Choir will perform at the Quogue Library at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday, May 4, there will be tennis clinics for all students, and there is also a “Dive” trip scheduled.
While it might be unlikely, it’s possible there’s space left at the table for the cooking demonstration, “Journey Around The Caribbean With Food and Fun,” scheduled at the library for today, Thursday, April 26, starting at 6 p.m., with your tour guide David Hersh of Rumba in Hampton Bays. Call the library to check, and be ready to run right over there if you’re lucky enough to get a seat.
This weekend will be your last chance to check out this month’s lovely exhibition at the Quogue Library Art Gallery: “A Life in Art: Paintings by Salvatore Gulla.” Starting on May 2, the library will have on display “Summer Light,” abstract and representational oils and watercolors by artist Margery Gosnell-Qua, with an artist’s reception scheduled on Saturday, May 5, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
