March is bringing more magic to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, with the return of “Zima: A Winter Production in the Woods,” on Saturday, March 2, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Taking its title from the Polish word for winter, “Zima” is a series of magical vignettes and tableaux of humans, sculptures and displays in the refuge forest, where a story will unfold, and you, the audience, will be asked to help solve a riddle.
“Zima” was created by Kate Mueth and her company, the Neo-Political Cowgirls, a professional acting/dance troupe that won the Dan’s Papers “Best Theatre Group in the Hamptons” designation.
Tickets for the magical dreamscapes of “Zima,” embracing the wonders of winter and nature, are $10 for adults and $5 for children, with proceeds benefiting the refuge. Refreshments and snacks will be served and there will be live music by the fire in the Nature Center.
Advance registration is requested, with payment due at time of reservation. All are asked to arrive between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. and dress appropriately for the weather, as “Zima” involves a 40-minute outdoor walk. Rain date is Sunday, March 3, at the same time.
Got little ones 1½ to 3½ who are ready to rock and roll? No, not that kind: The Quogue Library will be hosting some Children’s Creative Movement sessions providing an opportunity for tots to march, stretch, jump, roll, tumble, play, dance and sing.
Miss Nancy Lee leads this active, creative movement program, which will be held on Tuesdays, March 12 and March 19, at 11 a.m. Call the library (631-653-4224, ext. 4) to register.
Coming up in March at the Quogue Library Art Gallery will be “Beauty of Long Island, The Hamptons and the North Fork,” featuring works by the award-winning photographer Jake Rajs, a New York-based photographer with a career that spans more than 30 years.
Mr. Rajs specializes in commercial and art photography and is best known for architectural and landscape imagery, as displayed in his 16 coffee-table books currently in print, and in publications ranging from Time, Life, Newsweek, The New York Times, Esquire, and Town & Country to Travel & Leisure, New York, Men’s Health and National Geographic.
This exhibit, for which art gallery committee member Doreen Ceglia is chair, will be on display from March 1 to 31.
The Westhampton Beach Father Slomski Council of the Knights of Columbus will host its annual Free Throw Championship for boys and girls age 10 through 14 on Saturday, March 2, at the Westhampton Beach Elementary School Gym.
The gym will open at 9 a.m. for practice and the competition begins at 10. Proof of age is required to compete; applications are available from all physical education teachers or coaches. For further information, call Robert Montpetit at 631-875-7669.
Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the Quogue Library will be hosting an authentic “Irish pub food” cooking demonstration a week hence, on Thursday, March 7, at 6 p.m., with Buckley’s Inn Between owners Mark Shortall and Paul Fitzpatrick.
