Rare Treasure

I am urging the Southampton Town Board to keep this land as is, regardless of classification [“Fate of Southampton Town-Owned Poxabogue Field, Within Sagaponack Village, Is Debated at Town Board Meeting,” 27east.com, September 10].

I understand that it is in consideration to be returned to an agricultural use, but it has become an increasingly rare treasure here on the East End: an “old field” environment that now serves as habitat for wildlife, as well as having become a natural water quality buffer to Poxabogue Pond.

As development continues to insidiously encroach on our wild neighbors, we threaten that very unique thing that gives the East End its allure: nature.

This is a place where humans have cohabited with wildlife for thousands of years. To continue down this very destructive path we have been exploring recently would be a travesty.

There are many environmental issues threatening the East End; the least we can do is make smart decisions to protect this beautiful area from further development. We owe this to our future generations.

Please reconsider returning Poxabogue Field to agricultural use, and let it remain habitat for the already struggling wildlife we have left.
