Ray D. Lingwood
Ray D. Lingwood, a longtime resident of Water Mill, died at his home on November 22, just three days shy of his 91st birthday.
Born in New Rochelle and a 1939 graduate of Southamtpon High School, Mr. Lingwood joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in August 1942, serving in the Pacific as a sergeant in charge of a photographic unit until January 1946, after the war ended. He married Anna Kuhlmann in 1946 and worked at the Western Union Research Lab in Water Mill from 1946 to 1949, and again from 1953 to 1964; in between, he was a grocer in the original Water Mill Market, which he purchased in 1964. In 1971, he expanded his business with the founding of the Bridgehampton IGA—or, as he liked to call it, “the unusual supermarket,” specializing in out-of-the-ordinary items and friendly personal service.
Mr. Lingwood was a member of the Old Town Masonic Lodge, Loyal Order of the Moose, Bridgehampton Lions Club, and Water Mill Community Club, and served as a trustee and rental agent for the Bridgehampton Community House.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anna, and a daughter, Karen, who died in infancy. He is survived by two children, Sharon Lingwood Dickinson and David R. Lingwood, both of Water Mill; four grandchildren, Joanna, Desiree, Constantine and Justin; and a sister, Nesta Remkus of Sag Harbor.
Visitation was at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor on November 26. A funeral service took place on November 27, at the funeral home. Interment was at Southampton Cemetery.
