Raymond J. Maloney Jr. died peacefully at his Southampton Village home on February 11, with his wife of 37 years, Toni, at his side. He was 93.

Maloney was a true New Yorker: born in the Bronx, raised in Queens, educated at St. Francis College in Brooklyn and earned his law degree from St. John’s University in Queens. He lived most of his adult life in Manhattan, before making Water Mill and later Southampton Village his full-time home upon retirement.

A lawyer who ended up on advertising’s Madison Avenue, he was a trusted advisor to CEOs, government leaders and anyone who just needed help with legal matters. A substantial portion of his career was spent at the advertising agency BBDO where, as fate would have it, he first met his wife.

In the 1970s, he was a member of the BBDO team that advised President Gerald Ford as well as Nicaragua President Anastasio Somoza. In the 2000s, Maloney traveled to Afghanistan many times to aid and educate as part of his philanthropic work the Business Council for Peace (Bpeace), the award-winning nonprofit co-founded by his wife in 2002.

Later in life, Maloney began his explorations of art in various media such as Chinese watercolor, acrylics, oils and pastels — often memorializing scenes from his far-flung travels with his wife. His life sculptures in clay and bronze were inspired by his studio work at New York’s Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, Greenwich House Pottery and the Art Barge in Amagansett. He was a prolific artist, completing more than 300 works.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 24, at 11 a.m. at The Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, 168 Hill St., Southampton, NY.

Condolences may be left at brockettfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Art Barge in Amagansett, PO Box 1266, Amagansett, NY 11930, (damico-art.org/barge).

Trash Collections

Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle isn’t wrong when he says that his department shouldn’t bear the cost of emptying the sidewalk trash cans along the main street business districts in Hampton Bays, Bridgehampton, East Quogue and Water Mill. Quietly and abruptly removing those garbage cans on Tumbleweed Tuesday, however, resulting in piles of trash accumulating on the concrete pads where they used to stand, in an effort to draw attention to his complaint, lacked finesse on the highway superintendent’s part. For decades — longer than many can remember — the Highway Department has maintained the sidewalks along Montauk Highway ... by Editorial Board
