Raymond Michael Penney

Raymond Michael Penney died at his home in Southold on Thursday, August 2, following a battle with leukemia. He was 55.

Born in Brooklyn on June 18, 1957, Mr. Penney was the eldest son of James and Eila Penney and attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School, Birch Lane Elementary, McKenna Junior High, and graduated from Massapequa High School with the Class of 1975.

He passionately followed his gift and love for music, reaching the highest levels of his craft as a professional guitarist, avid musician, and instructor. He performed hundreds of times as a jazz, rock and blues guitarist. He leaves a collection of recordings as a band member and as a creative soloist with his award-winning renditions of classic lullabies and masterpieces that he composed for children and parents, titled “Goodnight Guitar” and “Goodmorning Guitar,” survivors said.

Most importantly, they said, Mr. Penney will be remembered by all who knew him as a caring friend, a man dedicated to family, and as a loving husband to his wife, Donna, and a devoted father to their sons, James and Daniel. He blessed everyone who knew him with his lively spirit, boundless imagination, incomparable humor and generous heart.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 11 a.m., at Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Southold.
