I’m pleased to report that the Watson household survived last week’s heat wave, though it was tough going at times. My plants were wilting, the lawn was burning up, and the cats were so lethargic that they barely had enough energy to swat or hiss at each other. And since I have taken a (perhaps foolish) stand against air conditioning, I walked in too many evenings to find my house thermostat gauge buried at 90 degrees.
But I have to say that, through it all, my hair looked terrific.
I’m not really bragging, though it might look that way. Actually, I had nothing to do with the pleasing appearance of my locks. The reason they escaped the humidity unscathed was due to a Brazilian straightening treatment I underwent a few weeks ago.
The price was not cheap, and it took about five hours for the process, but I have to tell you that it was money and time well spent for this gal, whose hair would inevitably look like Roseanne Roseannadanna’s pyramid-shaped pouf at the mere hint of humidity.
I’m generally pretty frugal and I’m not normally one to go in for fancy beauty treatments—my normal cut and color is a very reasonable $80 at Victoria Taylor Salon in East Quogue—and I still try to stretch appointments out as long as possible to get the most bang for my buck. But I’ve declared Brazilian straightening to be a beauty necessity.
My locks haven’t been this compliant since the long-ago high school days, before they began their journey toward grey. What a relief it has been to put away the hair dryer and flat iron.
So for all of the ladies out there with coarse grey hair (colored or not), or unruly, flyaway frizzies, I highly recommend the best way I know to beat the heat: book an appointment ASAP for semi-permanent straightening.
