Remsenburg And Speonk Community Notes, March 21

author on Mar 18, 2013

I caught the figure skaters out of the corner of my eye. This is the only way I see anything on TV these days. No one was watching it, but the TV was on in the family room. There was nice music playing, an occasional round of applause and the comfortingly authoritative voice of the commentators.

It all made for a nice, calming background noise for our house. And it reminded me of my Mom, who simply loves figure skating.

Coming home from Riverhead on Sunday I took a wrong turn and found myself in the Shire. Or maybe it was the little green people who had taken a wrong turn, or at least gotten off the train at the wrong stop at Speonk.

And then I saw the squad cars and put it all together with St. Patrick chasing the snakes out of Ireland, and bringing green beer to America, and realized it was only a little community policing, just to make sure that all the Leprechauns got home safe following their reveling in Montauk.

The deadline to enter your artworks in the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce’s annual Art Poster Contest is next Tuesday, March 26, so don’t wait! All entries will hang at the Westhampton Free Library from Wednesday, March 27, through Tuesday, April 16.

The top five vote-getters will be chosen at a dinner meeting on Wednesday, April 17, and the winning artwork will be used as the chamber’s promotional poster. Visit www.whbcc.org for all the details.

Mom tells me that this is the time of year for the big ice skating events, when they determine who advances to the Intergalactic Finals, and there are matches held all over the place. The good news is that she no longer has to rely on the major networks to broadcast the competitions as some website in Kazakhstan allows her to watch them all online.

Maybe when I am old enough to retire, they’ll have a website like that for horses. It they had a 24-hour horse channel, I would buy it. Or, in the very least, I’d have it playing in the background at all hours and watching it out of the corner of my eye.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
