Dorothy Labowski told me last week that the Remsenburg Garden Club’s tour of LongHouse Reserve was a big success. The group got a private viewing of the 16-acre arboretum, sculpture gardens and home of Jack Lenor Larsen in East Hampton last month right before it officially opened for the season this past weekend. During the group’s visit, more than 2,000 daffodils were in bloom. Additionally, club members were able to view the canopy of native trees, the lush gardens and more than 60 sculptures, plus they were given a private tour of Mr. Larsen’s home and private art collection by the owner himself.

After the tour, everyone stopped by another one of my favorite places—The Living Room c/o The Maidstone in East Hampton—for lunch. Sounds like a perfect day!

Don’t forget, the next Remsenburg Garden Club meeting is planned for Thursday, May 12. More on that next week.

Speaking Of Gardening: The 16th annual East End Garden Festival to benefit Peconic Bay Medical Center will be held this week, from Thursday, May 5, through Sunday, May 8, on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach. Stroll around and take your pick of discounted flowers and plants for sale, proceeds of which will benefit the Riverhead hospital. For additional information, call (631) 548-6080.

The Westhampton Free Library will host a free “Learn About the New Affordable Health Care Act” program for seniors on Thursday, May 5, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the library, located on Library Avenue in Westhampton Beach. The talk will be moderated by Remsenburg’s own Sally Pope and will feature keynote speaker Mark Hannay, president of the Metro New York Healthcare for All Campaign, and panel members Dr. James Dillard, Dr. David Posnett and Mike Anthony, the North Brooklyn Health Network administrator.

Items discussed will include the new Affordable Health Care Act; how Medicare beneficiaries can now get free preventative services, such as mammograms, colonoscopies and wellness visits; and prescription drug costs. Find out how the new health care laws will affect your bottom line. Reservations are suggested but not absolutely necessary. Call 353-1315 to guarantee a spot.

Congratulations to Remsenburger Neil Braun, whom many of you might have read right here in The Press, was recently named president of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center’s Board of Directors. Mr. Braun is also the dean of the Lubin School of Business at Pace University.

A Great Cause: Next weekend, there will be a Lionel Train Show for kids at the Remsenburg Academy, located on South Country Road in Remsenburg. The show will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15. The event has been organized by 10-year-old Jonah Holderer of Remsenburg and some of his friends who have decided to raise money for the tsunami and earthquake victims of Japan. Admission to the show will be $2. For more information, call 325-0867 or email wendyawax@yahoo.com.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
