It is disappointing that the former mayor continues to write falsehoods in his letters to The Southampton Press, as he did once again last week [“The Right Call,” Letters, October 3].
Jesse Warren obviously does not know me very well, but he revealed something about himself that was more troubling: He thinks it’s always about him.
Anybody who knows me, knows that I am my own person. As I stated when I ran for mayor last year, I am beholden to no one but the voters. Mr. Warren’s false assertion that one of my campaign donors wanted me to hire Anthony Carter could not be further from the truth. It was, in fact, the former mayor who introduced Mr. Carter to the rest of the board when I was a trustee.
I doubt any donors had ever heard of Anthony Carter. No donor has ever influenced me to take an action that I thought contrary to the best interest of the village, and no donor ever will.
The people of Southampton are tired of Mr. Warren trying to take us all down.
I hope he was listening when I spoke about the renowned former chapter president of the NAACP, Lucius Ware, at his funeral on Saturday. I said that what made Lucius such an exemplary and remarkable person was that it was never about him — it was always about others. We should learn from and be influenced by the example of Lucius Ware.
Our wonderful, small village is not the place for negativity. We all need to work constructively together to promote harmony in our community — and to continue making positive changes in Southampton.
