Revitalize Nugent Street

Thank God no one was hurt at the Stop & Shop supermarket fire.

It was only a week ago, I had a very brief meeting with the new Southampton Village mayor, Bill Manger, to wish him well and success.

My concerns were the loss of the three food markets in Southampton Village. We lost, most recently, Schmidt’s Market and, many years ago, the IGA, which is now CVS, and Gristedes, which is now Rite Aid. I offered him my unsolicited ideas for the revitalization of Nugent Street and use of the abandoned bank and post office. I suggested a three-story housing complex, with the entire ground floor as a supermarket.

Whether we like it or not, government is in the real estate business. It does not matter if it’s local, county or federal. They all own something and regulate it. We can address two major concerns: housing and a much needed supermarket.

It’s time to think about the other infrastructure that supports the residents of Southampton and Southampton Village. It’s time to think out of the box.

Now we have to deal with the inconvenience of no supermarket. Now we have to spend wasted hours to get our groceries at Bridgehampton or Hampton Bays. Is this supermarket fire a wakeup call?

Someone, please tell me why we cannot revitalize Nugent Street in Southampton Village.
