Richard A. Bossung of Westhampton and Longboat Key, Florida, died on October 23, surrounded by loved ones. He was 90.
Bossung was born on February 28, 1933, the second of three sons, to George and Marie Bossung in New York. He attended Lynbrook High School, where he excelled in football and basketball, and more importantly where he met his future wife Della Minerva. After graduating high school in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as military police during the Korean War.
On September 28, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart. Bossung was happiest spending time with his wife, and their pure love, joy, and devotion to one another was palpable, his family said. The two spent their days travelling, skiing, playing tennis and boating. Although they never had children of their own, they were always present in their many nieces and nephews’ lives, and provided many wonderful memories, which will be cherished, family said.
Bossung provided a wonderful life for his wife and himself, his family said, secondary to a keen sense of business and real estate. In his early years, he and his brother Robert started an electrical company, Bossung Brothers, as well as Hampton Dredging and Dock Building.
With his knack for entrepreneurship and love of tennis, he established the East Side Tennis Club in Westhampton in the 1970s.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty, kindness, sense of adventure and generosity, his family said.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Marie; his wife Della; his brother Robert; and his sisters-in-law Sadie, Jane, and Shawn. He is survived by his brother Kenneth; brother-in-law Giovanni; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 27, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Werner Rothwell Funeral home in Westhampton Beach. A service is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church on Quiogue.
