Lifelong Southampton resident Richard John Armusewicz died on August 23 after a long battle with lung disease.
Born in Southampton on August 24, 1934, to Vincent Armusewicz and Ann Zubina, Mr. Armusewicz worked for the Village of Southampton as a building maintenance supervisor, retiring after 38 years.
A U.S. Army veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1954 to 1956, he was a volunteer firefighter who was named Fireman of the Year 1970-71, and also held several offices, including captain of the Engine Company and secretary/treasurer of the Southampton Fire Department.
Mr. Armusewicz was a devout member of the congregation of Our Lady of Poland Church, serving as a trustee for many years and serving on the pastoral council and renovation committee. He also served as an usher at the 9:30 mass for more than 50 years, never missing a Sunday until he got sick. He was also a member of the American Polish Political Association and a member of the Southampton Golf Club.
Survivors recalled this week that, above all, his family was most important.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; six children, Mary Adamczyk and her husband Henry of Southampton, Catherine Abbott and her husband Charles of Buffalo, Richard Joseph Armusewicz and his wife Erin of California, Linda O’Brien and her husband Stephen of Southampton, Christine Dill and her husband Joshua of New Jersey and Patricia (P.J.) D’Angelo and her husband Stephen of Sag Harbor. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Michael and Katelyn Adamczyk, Olivia Abbott, Peter and Casey Armusewicz, Jack, Joseph and Katie O’Brien and Grace Patricia D’Angelo.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral mass was held at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church—due to renovation work at Our Lady of Poland Church— and interment followed at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Our Lady of Poland Renovation Fund or Southampton Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
