Richard Joseph (Dick) Micallef of Southampton died on February 9 in Southampton. He was 83.
Mr. Micallef was born in Brooklyn to Edgar and Carmelina on July 30, 1937. He was married to his high school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Betty Ann.
He worked in business development for various banks in New York and Southampton for over 40 years.
He enjoyed boating, travel, golf, and spending time with family and friends. He was a long respected member of Southampton Hospital’s Board of Directors and founding member of their Quarter-Backers Club.
Mr. Micallef was a Southampton College Board of Directors member and past president, Southampton Chamber of Commerce and Southampton Rotary past president, Boy Scouts of America/Peconic Bay District past vice chairman, and Salvation Army/Southampton Service Unit past chairman. He was honored with the American Heart Association Humanitarian With Heart award.
Mr. Micallef grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School, where he met the love of his life, Betty. They started their life together in Brooklyn, where they had daughters Sue and Lori. They moved to College Point for a short time. Mr. Micallef had always dreamed of raising his family in Southampton, where he summered as a child since he was 5 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Micallef built their first home together in 1969, and quickly became an integral part of the community.
Mr. Micallef had a passion for travel both international and domestic. He loved to tell stories of travel to Thailand, Hong Kong, Bali, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Croatia and the Caribbean, to name a few. Most recently, they spent winters in St. Martin and Florida.
During the summer months, he loved to spend time on or near the water. He loved socializing and sipping an Ultra Light on the beach in Towd Point, where he grew up as a child. Mr. Micallef was always the life of the party, according to his family. His smile and laugh was infectious, they said, noting that he loved to dance, sing, and tell jokes. Every holiday he planned detailed games and scavenger hunts for his grandchildren Nicole and Jillian.
Mr. Micallef is survived by his wife, Betty Ann of Southampton; daughters Sue (Tom) Sullivan of Port Washington and Lori (John) Ciotoli of Glen Head; grandchildren Nicole and Jillian Ciotoli; and dear nephews.
As a result of the pandemic, plans will be made for a celebration of life this summer.
