Richard Liggon Of Westhampton Beach Dies March 18

Richard Liggon of Westhampton Beach died on March 18. He was 88.

Mr. Liggon was born on December 23, 1927, in Cartersville, Virginia, one of 10 children. In 1946 he moved to Long Island and worked as a farmer. In 1948 he married Dottie L. Brown and they had two children, Alberta and Richard Jr.

He joined the First Baptist Church of Riverhead in 1962 and was a member of the church’s men’s chorus and the Senior Usher Board. In 1980, he was named president of the Usher Board.

In 1965, Mr. Liggon joined Tyre Masonic Lodge 91 in Riverhead; he proceeded through the Masonic teachings and became a Master Mason and after earning three degrees he was elected Worshipful Master. In 1973 he became a member of the Royal Arch Mason 36 and served as Excellent High Priest for one year and served as chaplain during that time. In 1973 he joined the Consistory, became a member of the Shriners and received his thirty second degree in Masonry.

Mr. Liggon retired from Southampton Town Highway Department. During his 30 years of employment, he was a tractor-trailer driver, heavy equipment operator and advanced to foreman. In 1986 he worked at the Presbyterian Church of Westhampton Beach.

Survivors said he attended church faithfully and attended Lodge duties. He enjoyed dancing, playing Take 5 lottery scratch-offs and landscaping. He was known to many as “Uncle Richard,” and was a hard worker, loyal to his friends and family. He was known to whistle whenever he entered the house to let his family know that it was him coming through the door.

Mr. Liggon was predeceased by his siblings. He is survived by a daughter, Alberta of Brooklyn; a son, Richard Jr. of Westhampton Beach; four grandchildren, Felicia, Sonny, Michelle and Cinthia; a great-grandson, Chester; a brother-in-law,Walter Brown; a sister-in-law, Verna Brown; and a number of relatives and friends. He is also survived by Marie Futch and her family.

Funeral services were arranged by the Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. Burial was at Westhampton Cemetery.
