Richard “Rick” Shumway of Southampton died on February 8, 2017. He was 66.

Born in Oneonta, Mr. Shumway moved to Eastern Long Island in 1978. As the owner of Atlantic Collaborative Construction Company in Bridgehampton, he was a prominent and respected builder of both homes and commercial buildings in the area, survivors said. With Atlantic, he oversaw the construction of some of the most impressive modern structures on the East End.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Shumway enjoyed spending time in nature in all seasons.

He is survived by his wife Diane; a son, Erek; a daughter, Meredith; a grandson, Logan; his mother, Madeline Shumway; two sisters, Gail Valk and Janis Murray; a brother, John Shumway; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, as well as his beloved dogs, Bailey and Halo.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the Southampton Inn on Hill Street in Southampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Northern Frontier Camper Scholarship Fund, northernfrontier.org; the Peconic Land Trust, peconiclandtrust.org; the Southampton Animal Shelter, southamptonanimalshelter.com; or a charity of your choice.

Emphasis Needed

This week’s Southampton Press comments were spot on, publishing two letters concerning our environment. One of the opinions addressed the sacrifices to our well-being that are made when overuse of water and chemicals to maintain a beautiful lawn overshadows the dangers involved. In addition, the tremendous overuse of plastics in packaging and wrapping is going to continue to take ever-increasing tolls on the environment and, more significantly, our health. My main concern is that the younger generation, from grammar school children forward, are not made aware, through more vigorous emphasis throughout their education, of the dangers to our environment. Protect Horseshoe Crabs

These arthropods have survived five mass extinctions on planet Earth in their 450-million-year existence. That’s an extraordinary feat. They are known as a keystone species, meaning other animals, such as migratory birds, depend on them for their own survival. Horseshoe crabs also have contributed to lifesaving medical advancements and improved human health. Now, it is our turn to help them.
