Richard W. Allen Jr. of Hampton Bays died on August 8 at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. He was 89.
Born April 7, 1927, in Rockville Center, Mr. Allen was raised in Lynbrook and joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. After attending radar training in Florida, he was assigned to the destroyer USS Brinkley Bass DD887, which saw action in the Pacific.
When he was discharged, he returned home, worked for a short while at the Coca Cola bottling plant in Rockville Center, and then joined his father and brothers in the masonry business.
In 1967, he moved to Hampton Bays, and with his former wife, Rosalie Allen, built and operated Allen’s Acres Resort Motel on Foster Avenue. After leaving the motel business in 1974, he expanded his construction and renovation business, eventually retiring in 1992.
Mr. Allen had been a president of the Hamptons Association, a member of the Southampton Town Board of Architectural Review, a Republican Committee member, a member of the Southold American Legion Post 803, the USS Brinkley Bass Association and Island’s End Golf Club.
He enjoyed traveling to see some of the world’s masonry wonders including Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, and attending his ship’s annual reunion.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Patricia G. (Gregor) Allen; two sons, Richard W. Allen III and wife Betheny of Florida and Rhode Island, and Randolph S. Allen and wife Catherine of Hampton Bays; two grandchildren, Caitlin Allen and Brandon Allen. He was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert Allen of Hampton Bays and Robert Allen of Florida.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A memorial service was held on August 13, officiated by the Reverend Philip Hubbard of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Interment was at Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.
