Richard W. Carter of East Quogue died on September 30, 2017, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care. He was 86.
Mr. Carter graduated from Westhampton Beach High School and held an associate’s degree in ornamental horticulture from the Long Island Agricultural Institute in Farmingdale. Following graduation, he married Shirley and together they formed Carter Landscaping, Inc., which he ran until 2015.
He was a 67-year member of the East Quogue Fire Department, serving as chief from 1960 to 1962. He was on the department’s tournament team and held the New York State time record for the motorized ladder event. He taught Red Cross first aid and was a member of the rescue squad.
A member of the East Quogue School Board for eight years, he served as board president during the time when the original part of the current school was built.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; a son, Bruce; and daughter, Dorothy Remedy. He is also survived by grandchildren, Susan Kosinski, Christopher, Brittany and Courtney Carter, Gavin and Devon Clarke; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Alex Kosinski. He was predeceased by a son, George, in 1990.
A funeral service took place on October 3 at the East Quogue United Methodist Church, of which he was a member for 63 years. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach.
