Riverhead Town has filed a lawsuit against Suffolk County regarding its placement of a trailer on the grounds of the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside that serves as a temporarily shelter for homeless sex offenders.
Riverhead Town Supervisor Phil Cardinale explained that the lawsuit, filed last week in Suffolk County Supreme Court, alleges that the county broke its own law, as well as state law, by placing the trailer there. The suit points out that the trailer is located near a playground and a library—both places where children gather. The trailer, which arrived in Riverside in 2007, was recently upgraded and can now house as many as 20 sex offenders at one time.
Town officials will hold a press conference regarding their lawsuit on Friday at 10 a.m. at Riverhead Town Hall on Howell Avenue in Riverhead.
