A Riverhead man was arrested Thursday morning, July 9, in connection with an assault at the Suffolk County bus stop at the traffic circle in Riverside after Southampton Town Police said an argument over wearing a protective face covering became physical.
Ernest Ryshaun Clay, 43, of Riverhead was arrested at about 9:45 a.m. and charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
When police arrived at the bus stop, they found a 46-year-old woman with a laceration to her head. She told officers she had been riding the bus and asked Mr. Clay to don a mask while on the bus, according to police.
Police said the pair argued and when they got off the bus at the Peconic Avenue stop Mr. Clay punched the woman.
She was tended to at the scene by members of the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance
