Robert “Bob” Terry of Hampton bays died peacefully on July 12. He was 90.

He was born in Southampton on July 16, 1934, and lived his whole life in Hampton Bays, where he and his beloved wife, Mary, raised a large and happy family.

He believed in working hard and playing hard. From the age of 16, he worked in construction and commercial fishing, spending many years as a builder and as a bayman.

He was an avid outdoorsman and instilled that passion in his family. He knew and loved everything about Shinnecock Bay and some of his happiest moments were spent fishing, clamming, and duck hunting. If he could bring a kid (or 10) along to any of those adventures, that would make him even happier.

He was intentional throughout his life, particularly in choosing to be a devoted husband and father. For many years, the size of his enormous kitchen table was legendary, reflecting his lifelong view that there was always room for one more. His family was his pride and joy, but, being a kid at heart, he loved all children. He somehow always found time to coach teams, umpire Little League, be a Scout parent and attend most, if not all, of his kids’ sporting events. With limited resources, he made every Christmas special, and his children will cherish his dedication.

His family would like to thank East End Hospice and his caregivers for their support and compassion.

He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Mary, in February of 2019. He is survived by his children, Robert (Marsha), Joseph (Lisa), James (Kathy), Mary, Kathleen (Damien), Richard (Kerry), Frances (Chuck), Bridget (Ian), Eileen (Matt) and Sean; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his brothers, Jimmy and Jack; and many close friends.

In accordance with his wishes, there will not be a wake. His funeral Mass will be on what would have been his 91st birthday at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at Sacred Hearts Church in Southampton, followed by interment at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.

Green Light

Sometime in November, it appears that some new traffic patterns will appear along County Road 39. They won’t be brand new — they are the result of a great deal of testing and trial-and-error this year, led by Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle. For the first time, though, they will become the full-time rules of the road. Generally, that could be beneficial. The ad hoc changes along the busy highway, particularly in the afternoon to try to deal with the outflowing westbound traffic, create confusion and probably add to slowdowns, at least at first. This way, drivers who regularly ... by Editorial Board

Paging King Solomon

Anyone who believes every local issue is cut-and-dried, and simple to resolve, should take a closer look at Poxabogue Field in Sagaponack, and at least acknowledge just how thorny a choice the Southampton Town Board faces. On the surface, it should be simple. The eight-plus-acre farm field would have become just another high-end subdivision, but the late Geri Bauer bought it in 1987 — a time before the Community Preservation Fund and other farmland preservation efforts had been born — to keep it in agriculture. In 2021, with the CPF firmly in place, she completed the task by selling it ... by Editorial Board
