Robert “Bob” Walter Gill of Southampton died peacefully at Stony Brook Hospital on August 6, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous and lengthy battle with medical complications. He was 81.

He was born in Huntington on May 12, 1943. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, in which he served with distinction in Alaska and Germany until his honorable discharge in 1967.

In 1965, he married Mary Ann Ferreira, and together they started a family. Known for his curious and creative mind, Gill had a passion for all things building and mechanical. He began his career working with his father at Tuckahoe Hardware Store in Southampton, where he opened a flooring section.

Wanting to pursue his love of flying, he moved his wife and then young son to Daytona to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, becoming a pilot and flight instructor. During his time in Florida, he also worked part-time in a carpet store.

Upon returning to Southampton, the couple opened The Carpetman store, invested in real estate and later developed the complex on County Road 39A, where The Carpetman is now located.

His love of the water led to many joyful times boating and maintaining a second home in Ponce Inlet, Florida. He cherished the annual yacht trips along the intercoastal waterways between Southampton and Daytona with family and friends.

In 1993, he sold The Carpetman to his son, Robert, to spend more time in Florida. Ever the entrepreneur, he pursued a real estate license and successfully established Gill Properties of Florida Inc. in Daytona.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ann Gill; his son, Robert E. Gill of Southampton; his daughter, Tracey A. Gill of Southampton; his brother, Thomas Gill of Aiken, South Carolina; his sisters, Judy Hyre of Ontario, Canada, and Susen Shields of Newnan, Georgia; five grandchildren, Ryan, Conor, Colby, Kiera Gill and Jarred Halsey; his nephews, Aaron, Marvin, James and Jeff Gill, Todd Brewer, John Ferreira, David Ferreira, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert V. Gill and Selma S. Gill; and his brother, James R. Gill.

A private graveside service will be held on Monday, August 12, with a celebration of life event planned for a later date.

Donations in honor of Robert W. Gill can be made to the Southampton Lions Club, PO Box 358, Southampton, NY 11969-0358.

Wasted Dollars

At the end of the Southampton Village Board’s November 13 meeting, Mayor Bill Manger announced that he wants to use taxpayer money to build a village “app” listing local sites, such as the World War I monument and the First Presbyterian Church. This sounds like satire, but it’s not. Not only is this unnecessary, it shows a complete misunderstanding of what apps are for and how government should spend public funds. An app that shows people where the World War I monument is already exists. It’s called Google Maps. It’s free, it’s accurate, it’s updated in real time — and ... by Staff Writer

Scourge Continues

Scourge: a person or thing that causes great suffering, affliction or misery. The latest from our local government is that they’re not going to ban gas-powered leaf blowers, because they can’t enforce the law. This is backward thinking. First comes the law, and then comes enforcement. As it is now, my neighbors can use that blower nine hours a day, six days a week. And they do. And I have no rights. If there was a law, I would have the right to tell them that what they were doing was unlawful, and I would have the law on my ... by Staff Writer

Traffic Initiative

Southampton Village is currently considering an important zoning amendment designed to improve traffic conditions and promote more efficient transportation planning. Under the proposed code, every permit application will be required to include a detailed transportation plan, including the number of vehicles expected to be on site between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Approved permits will clearly display the authorized number of vehicles in bold type, enabling the police department, the Building Department, and neighboring residents to help monitor and support compliance. This initiative represents a meaningful first step toward reducing congestion throughout the village. The goal of ... by Staff Writer

Not Intimidated

Thank you to everyone who read my letter last week [“Baffling Decision,” Letters, November 13], and a special thank you to Stephen Ring for circulating it on his famous listserv. It was an unexpected honor, and I’m grateful for the many notes of encouragement. I know that speaking up comes with a predictable pattern of attacks, so it’s especially nice to receive something positive. I feel it’s everyone’s civic duty to speak out, and I refuse to be intimidated by personal attacks or online pile-ons. Thank you again to all who reached out. Your support makes it worth it.
