Robert Charos of Riverhead died on September 29 surrounded by family following a short illness. He was 71.
Mr. Charos was born in Brooklyn and at a young age moved to East End of Long Island, where he spent his entire life. Mr. Charos was a graduate of Mercy High School class of 1967 and attended Hofstra University, where he graduated in 1971 with degree in communications.
Mr. Charos was innovative, combining his love of music and electronic equipment bringing the idea of audio/video installations, telephone systems, and car stereo to the East End when he founded Charos Custom Sound in 1973, which he ran for almost 40 years.
Mr. Charos will be remembered for his love of music, a teasing sense of humor, a life-long love of boating, dogs and his family.
Mr. Charos’s family will miss his kindness and generosity.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Charos; daughters Julia Distenfeld ( David) and Andrea Abernethy (Julian); his father Thomas Charos; his two grandchildren Sydney and Stephen; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy Charos; and his brother Stephen Charos.
