Robert F. Carey of Ridge died at the Hampton Care Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton on May 26. He was 94.

Born in Manhattan in 1914, he was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and won awards for both swimming and achievements in literature. A former executive of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, he worked in Manhattan but his work often brought him to eastern Long Island.

He is survived by two daughters, Frances Burns of Southampton and Virginia Marnell of Manhattan, and a grandson, Thomas Burns, also of Manhattan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at Sacred Hearts Church in Southampton. A reception will follow.

Hampton Bays Beautification held its 39th annual Garden Party and Famous Auction at Oakland’s Restaurant on June 7. It has come to my attention that there is an effort afoot to move our beloved college windmill off our campus, where it has resided for many decades [“New Push To Move Southampton’s Oldest Windmill From College Campus Back to Village,” 27east.com, June 11]. There are approximately 10,000 Southampton College alumni. We have contributed to the area since 1963. The alums have become teachers, doctors, politicians, lawyers, scientists, athletes, nurses, bankers and business owners, just to name a few occupations. I am proud of all I have helped accomplish, starting with upgrading our volunteer fire and ambulance department’s outdated and aging equipment and restoring the morale of these two most important organizations.
