Robert G. Hugel of Avon, Connecticut, died on October 19, 2016. He was 91. Born and raised in the Bronx, he was the son of the late George and Mabel (Larsen) Hugel, and served in the U.S. Army as an airplane armorer gunner in combat during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Rider University and spent his early career with his family insurance agency, Sentinel Insurance Agency in New York City. He also was employed by the insurance department of General Telephone before moving to Connecticut in 1964, when he started as insurance manager for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. He retired as assistant treasurer risk manager from United Technologies, in 1988. An avid tennis player, he was a member of the Golf Club of Avon and Farmington Farms. He was a member of Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, Avon, and was past treasurer of the Friends of Heublein Tower, and enjoyed reading.
Predeceased by his wife, Audrey (Bell), he is survived by two sons, Drevet G. Hugel of Southampton, and Craig R. Hugel and wife Lisa of Connecticut; a daughter, Lynn H.R. Monterville and husband Gary of Connecticut; a brother, Ronald Hugel and wife Mitzie of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law Phyllis Hugel of Valhalla; five grandchildren, Stephanie Bell Bahre, Kendall J. Rogers, David A. Hugel, Stephen C. Hugel and fiancée Hanna, and Laura E. Hugel; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Hugel.
A graveside service with military honors was held October 30 at Evergreen Cemetery in Avon; the Reverend Daniel Hille officiated.
