Robert R. Lester of Southampton died on September 28. He was 97.
“Captain Bob,” as he was known to friends, was one of eight children of Frank and Sadie Lester.
He was born on May 18, 1925, into an Amagansett fishing family with roots dating back to whaling times.
Lester would himself go on to spend his entire working life upon the local waters.
Quietly patriotic, he joined to U.S. Marine Corps as soon as he was eligible, spending three years in the Pacific during World War II.
His needs were plain and simple, his family said, and his values traditional and logical: don’t lie, cheat, gossip or steal and treat people the way you would want to be treated.
He was predeceased by his wife Hope Penny Lester in 2020. He is survived by his children, Sue Lester, MaryAnn Mosley, Kim Lester and wife Grace, David Lester and wife Julia; brothers Richard and Harry; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
