Robert Terry Young of Quogue died at home on September 15, 2019. He was 78.

Mr. Young was the son of Dorothy and Walter A. Young of Freeport. He enjoyed building cars with the Freeport Rod Snapper Race Club, and spending time on the bay fishing, clamming, and duck hunting. It was this love for being on the water that compelled him to work on environmental preservation later in life.

He served in the United States Navy from 1964 through 1968. Following his time in the service, he attended the State University of New York at Oswego, earning a Bachelor of Science cum laude, a Master of Science in industrial arts, and later received a school administrator and supervisor certificate.

It was at Oswego the he met Roberta Owen, who would become his wife; they were married for 50 years.

Mr. Young’s passion was teaching and helping young people learn and achieve their full potential. He worked for Lindenhurst Public High School as a teacher and administrator of the Industrial Arts Department for 30 years. Simultaneously, and his wife managed the Surf Club of Quogue during the summers for 42 years, where he was known as T.Y. It was here they made lifelong friendships and continued teaching and mentoring the many youth and staff at the club.

Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Roberta; and two children, Owen and wife Kristina; and Amanda and husband Christopher Clapp; four grandchildren, Christofer and Janey Young of Massachusetts, and Dylan and Lily Clapp of Westhampton Beach; and a sister, Lauren Petersen and husband Leland.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 27, at 11 a.m. at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, 3 Old Country Road, in Quogue. All are invited.

Memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Long Island Chapter, 250 Lawrence Hill Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724, Attn: Ann Lader, or the the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, Box 492 Quogue, NY 11959.
