Rose A. Strand (nee Ach) of Southampton died peacefully at home on August 24, surrounded by her family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. She was 88.
She was born on September 4, 1933, in Queens, to Rose (Van Keuren) and Raynor W. Ach. Her bother, William R., arrived in August 1939, and her sister Frances Virigina (Ginny) was born in December 1942.
Strand graduated from Dominican Commercial, and soon started a career with NY Telephone. This job led her out to Southampton.
In 1957, she met Donald Andrew “Andy” Strand of Southampton, and they were married in 1958. Together they went on to have a daughter, Cynthia A. (Cindi) in 1960. Her husband died in September 1960 as a result of injuries sustained from a vehicle accident while on duty as a New York State Trooper.
In 1973, Strand became friends with John Goleski, and they remained companions until his death in 2011.
In 1978, Strand, who managed the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Long Island University Southampton, started her college career — one course per semester, starting with Suffolk County Community College, and culminating in graduation from LIU Southampton with a Bachelor of Science degree in business in the mid-1990s.
She was a wonderful and loving mother, her family said, who raised her daughter in the house she had built in Southampton. She absolutely doted on her grandchildren. “We will never be able to fill the space left behind by her,” her family said.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andy; her parents Rose and Ray; her brother Billy; her companion John; and her son-in-law Lahsen Boumnaia.
She is survived by her daughter Cindi (Boumnaia) and her sons Andrew and Benjamin; her sister Ginny (McAuley); her sister-in-law Eileen (Strand); and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or East End Hospice (eeh.org) would be appreciated by the family.
